Debt is something that is owed or that one is bound to pay to or perform for another. If anyone one tells you that you can live and not owe some form of debt, they’re not telling you the truth. As long as you live, you will encounter debt. As long as there is an exchange from one person to another, a debt will transpire or take place from the exchange of goods, favors, food, time, money, etc.
I applaud the programs that teach you how to be “debt-free”, but this isn’t the whole truth. Paying off your mortgage, having an emergency fund, children’s college fund, retirement fund, is good common sense, but it’s not a guarantee that you will be debt-free or stress-free. Expenses and investments can change at a moment’s notice and place you in a position where once debt-free, you are now in debt or living in poverty.
We saw this during the 2008 global recession resulting in massive home foreclosures, high unemployment, suicide, and rates of depression. The Dow lost more than half its value. As a result, hundreds of thousands of Americans who had significant portions of their life saving invested in the stock market suffered catastrophic financial losses.
During the Recession, I was hit hard too and went from making six figures to no figures! I followed Peter’s actions and went to Jesus and told him I didn’t have any money to pay my taxes (Matthew 17:24-27 NIV). After returning to school and filling out over 400 applications I landed a job as a Certified Educator at the age of 57. I also gave birth to my book, Who Stole My Blanket? 6 Easy Steps to Rebuild Your Life After An Income Loss.
During this time, my husband and I never missed a mortgage payment on our house or investment properties. My book details how to find employment regardless of your age or looks. It explains how to turn your dreams into reality, leave a legacy for your heirs, rid negative thoughts in your mind, maintain a youthful appearance, overcome gender barriers, fears, depression, and discrimination in ANY economy.
