#HelpForDepression: Step 28 You are Not #Cursed!

#Albert Einstein is widely credited with saying, “The definition of #insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.” Many individuals go through life and don’t learn from their mistakes. They’re unable to fully realize their dreams, gifts, and talents. This dilemma is particularly disheartening for many Americans who live in the #land of opportunity but fall short of being able to accomplish the #American Dream.

One thought system I had to overcome was the belief that I was somehow “cursed” at birth. Growing up in the U.S. many women like myself are told explicitly and implicitly that #girls and #African Americans are somehow inferior. This isn’t unique to the United States. In many countries, girls aren’t valued to the same degree as males and aren’t afforded the same educational and advancement opportunities.

This devaluation of others takes place in many countries around the world and can be based on an individual’s race, color, gender, national origin, or the family they were born in to. Some societies still have modern-day #caste systems in which individuals are divided into rigid social groups. For example, if you are born into the lower class, your birth certificate dictates that you will always be in the lower class. In other words, your fate is that you will always be poor and your great, great, great-grandchildren, ad infinitum will always bear the #curse of poverty.

Technology, globalization, socio-economic advancements, the politics of democracy, urbanization, and #affirmative action have helped to reduce legal forms of a caste system. Unfortunately, prejudice and devaluing others still exist in modern-day society. What is most disheartening, however, is when individuals refuse to take advantage of new-found freedoms. They continue to do the same thing over and over, but they don’t see different results.

A study was done with #fleas who were encased in a jar with a lid. The fleas kept trying to escape, but couldn’t because of the lid. After the lid was removed, they refused to fly out. Their minds were conditioned to only fly so high and their offspring followed their example and refused to fly out.

Likewise, many formerly enslaved and imprisoned individuals by birth or circumstances, continue to do the same crazy behavior because their mistaken beliefs tell them they are cursed. They believe that since they were born into poverty, they will always be poor. They believe that because they are female, they can’t achieve on the same level as men. They believe that because their parents were depressed, abused, alcoholic, drug addicts, low-lifers, and plagued with diseases, their lot in life is the same.

My #come to #Jesus moment literally, was when I accepted the Word that told me that I was #the head and not the tail. It told me I could do all things through him. I believed his Word and realized that there is no limit to what I can do in this lifetime.

You are loved, capable, intelligent, beautiful, and fearfully and wonderfully made! The #creator’s will is that you have life and that more abundantly. I dare you to try him! If you like this post, please give me a thumbs up, comment, and brighten someone else’s day by sharing it.

If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:36 NIV
