#HelpForDepression: Step 22 What the #AnimalKingdom Teaches Us About #OvercomingHardships

Science tells us that humans and their ancestors have been on this planet for about 6 million years. One thing I have learned from observing the animal kingdom is how parents provide, protect, and watch over their offspring. Their young instinctively trust that their parents will watch over and guide them. Man, as the highest form of creation can reason, verbally communicate, create, and problem solve. We, however, must learn to do a better job of caring for our young.

The animal kingdom has done a spectacular job of adapting over the centuries, but the same can’t be said for mankind. If we look at how poorly adjusted the young are and how man has taken care of the planet, we would have to say that man is a poorly adapted creature.

Depression and #suicide are on the rise in the U.S., especially among young teens, according to researchers at #Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and the #CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy.

In an article in #Mental Health, Child and Adolescent Health, it states that “The increase in rates of depression was most rapid among the youngest and oldest age groups, whites, the lowest income and highest income groups, and those with the highest education levels. These results are in line with recent findings on increases in drug use, deaths due to drug overdose, and suicide.”

My advice from experiencing hardships is that there comes a point where you just have to stand still and see God’s hand move in your life. After trying pills, medicine, therapy, exercise, counseling, there comes a point where you just have to trust God as found in #Psalm 91:4: “He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.”

God’s truth, like a shield, protects us overall and is with us in our hearts. Like a buckler, which is a portable shield, his truth protects specific parts of the body the enemy attacks—our health, mind, body, emotions, finances, and relationships. As a society, we must do a better job of teaching the next generation adaptive skills if we are to survive and thrive on this planet. I dare you to try him! If you like this post, please give me a thumbs up, comment, and brighten someone else’s day by sharing it.

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. Psalm 91:11
